Nehemiah 6:14 (HCSB)

My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat for what they have done, and also Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who wanted to intimidate me.

Nehemiah came under intense pressure from powerful men (and at least one woman—Noadiah).  God could certainly have shielded him from this pressure, removing the opposition; however, this is not God’s normal way of working, not with Nehemiah and not with us.
God rarely removes opposition to the gospel.  My presumption is that he does this to teach us to depend upon him for strength.  One sees is again and again in the book of Nehemiah where the cupbearer is forced to appeal to The Lord for support in the work which God has given him to do.
It’s important for us to understand that when we are obedient to God we will usually face opposition.
