Matthew 26:54 (HCSB)

How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”

Fascinating insight into Christ’s view and knowledge of Scripture (OT/Tanakh) here. It’s clear that Christ:
  1. Knew the Scriptures well, for he does not consult a scroll when he tells the disciples this.
  2. He applies the OT prophecies to himself without the slightest hint of doubt that they were speaking about him.
  3. The OT prophecies must be fulfilled.

Christ reminds us of this just a couple of sentences later: Matthew 26:56 (HCSB)

But all this has happened so that the prophetic Scriptures would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and ran away.
Our understanding of the nature and importance of the Scriptures is derived from how we see Christ interact with them.  We take a high view of them because Christ did, or as John Stott put it: We bow to the authority of the Scriptures because we bow to the authority of Christ.
