John 20:17 (HCSB)

Don’t cling to Me,” Jesus told her, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father — to My God and your God.”

After his resurrection, God was My Father and your Father; My God and your God. The relationship was different—our Lord does not say “Our Father,”—but the same—God is Christ’s followers’  Father as well as Christ’s father.
There is real hope here because the last interaction that Christ had with his disciples before this point, they had all deserted him and then Peter had denied him.  How they must have marveled at his genuine acceptance of them despite their shame.  We are like the disciples in that sense, when we deny him, he does not deny us because he cannot deny himself.
Our Lord is good, kind, and faithful…and forgiving of the costliest of sins.
