I’m struck in reading Acts 7 this morning, with Stephen’s knowledge of the Scriptures. As near as I can tell he quotes—without reference to a text—from Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Amos, and Isaiah.  Amazing.  He also quotes several different passages from Genesis and Exodus.

This amazes us, but was not all that surprising at the time.  Practically all students would have memorized the Torah and especially bright students would have memorized most or all of the Old Testament.
The brain is a super computer which we do not take sufficient advantage of.  This also sheds new light on the transmission of the stories that made up the gospels.  The gospel writers lived at a time in which memory was utilized a lot more than now.  They humble us.
