“You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:1 HCSB)

The Tyndale Commentary points out here: “The phrase that is in Christ Jesus qualifying grace shows not only that the grace comes from Christ alone, but also that all Christians possess it and may rely on its enabling power.”

So when Paul tells Timothy to be strong in grace, he is telling all followers of Christ to be strong in grace.  This is possible because grace is the lot of all Christians who have received it from Christ.  The thinking then goes something like this:

  1. Grace comes from Christ Jesus
  2. Every Christian possesses grace
  3. Therefore every Christian may rely upon grace, indeed may be strong in grace.

Paul sums this teaching up elsewhere quite succinctly: “I can do all things through him who strengths me” [same word as “be strong in the grace”] (Phil 4.13)

Where, dear reader, does your strength come from?
