“Happy is one who cares for the poor; the LORD will save him in a day of adversity.”(Psalms 41:1 HCSB)

If there is one thing that is clear about the Christian faith—as passed down consistently from the Old Testament—it is that as followers of Christ we should care for the poor.  Here David picks up the theme with a promise, the one who cares for the poor is not only happy, but the Lord will save that person from adversity.

Paul’s journey to Jerusalem comes to mind here when the leaders of the church tell Paul as he goes to the Gentiles, “Only remember the poor,” the very thing, Paul says, that he was eager to do. (Gal 2.10)

We would do well to heed Paul and David and Peter and James and John here.
