““You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”” (Matthew 27:40 ESV)

Those who opposed Jesus mocked him at the cross with these words.  They did not know what they were saying, if they had known they would not have asked him to come down from the cross.  Peter will explain in Acts why they did not really want what they asked for.  Jesus was their only hope:

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.””
(Acts 4:12 ESV)

If Jesus had come down from the cross, their own sins never could have been paid for, nor mine, nor your’s dear reader. This was foolish mockery like we haven’t seen in the history of the entire world.  Thankfully for us, Jesus did not come down.  He stayed up on the cross and died so that we might live.
