“When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the world’s garbage, like the dirt everyone scrapes off their sandals.” (1 Corinthians 4:12–13 HCSB)

Paul is speaking of himself and those with him in this passage, but of course it applies to every Christian who is reviled, persecuted and slandered. We struggle to bless when we are reviled.  We find it difficult to endure when we are persecuted.  We do not usually respond graciously when we are slandered.  We have some work to do here.

For the cause of Christ, Paul became like dirt that everyone scrapes off their sandals.  We should expect no better treatment.  Indeed, Jesus said that this is how the world would treat us.  It’s how the world treated him.
