And there is a difference between God’s gift and the sin of one man. After the one sin, came the judgement of “Guilty”; but after so many sins, comes the undeserved gift of “Not guilty!”” (Romans 5:16, GNB)

I like the way the Good News Bible translates this verse.  After Adam’s sin all mankind was under a death sentence.  All of us are metaphorically set at the bar of God’s justice and back comes the decision from the sovereign judge: Guilty!

That, however, is not the end of the story.

Having been justified by faith (Rom 5.1), through the atoning work of Christ at the cross, those who follow Christ by faith receive a gift that they do not deserve.  The decision comes down from the bar of God’s justice:  “Not guilty!”

The purpose of Christ and the gift of his sacrifice for us was to change us from “Guilty!” to “Not guilty!” through the undeserved gift of Christ at the cross.

As my grandson, Kian says:  “This makes my heart happy.”
