And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:13–14, ESV)

This is a favorite passage.  I’m sure it is my Bible reading highlight every time I get to this section of Colossians.

  1. We were dead (in our trespasses and sins)
  2. God made us alive (here is a humbling thought.
We did not raise ourselves from the dead.  God did that)
  3. God made us alive by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands (Guilty, we were–as Yoda might say–but God took care of the guilt for us!)
  4. He nailed it all to the cross (Inconceivable!)
