But we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, so that through God’s grace he should die for everyone. We see him now crowned with glory and honour because of the death he suffered.” (Hebrews 2:9, GNB)

The reason that Jesus was “made lower than the angels” was that he had a mission to accomplish assigned to him by God the Father.  He was to die so that men would not have to die because of their own sins.  This came about through God’s grace.  Men were sinners.  Men were guilty.  God is just.  He must punish sin.  Jesus paid the punishment for our sins.  This is the good news.  This is the gospel.
