For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” (Hebrews 13:14, KJV 1900)

I like the KJV translation of this verse.  As follower’s of Jesus Christ, this world is not our home, we consider ourselves strangers and only pilgrims here.  We are seeking a city whose founder and maker is God.  We long for an eternal city in heaven with God the Father.

Jonathan Edwards preached his farewell sermon to his church at Northampton which he had faithfully served for 20 years (and was asked to leave) on this passage, reminding his members that they would all stand before God some day and give an account of their time in Northampton.  The world is temporary, it is no lasting city.

If you are pegging your hopes, dear reader, on the treasures you have stored up for yourself on this earth, you are most foolish.  This city will not last.  God’s city will last for eternity.
