then a throne will be established in steadfast love, and on it will sit in faithfulness in the tent of David one who judges and seeks justice and is swift to do righteousness.”” (Isaiah 16:5, ESV)

Then one of David’s descendants will be king, and he will rule the people with faithfulness and love. He will be quick to do what is right, and he will see that justice is done.)” (Isaiah 16:5, GNB)

This is obviously a prophecy of Messiah.  Isaiah writes in terms that those who hear or read the words will understand, this man will come as a King and have the characteristics of a good king.

  • He will be established in steadfast love (hesed).  He will perfectly reflect God’s covenant love for his people
  • He will sit in faithfulness. He is a king who is worthy of our trust because he acts faithfully not perniciously or maliciously
  • He is a king who seeks justice.  Good kings make sure that they act justly, that evil is punished a good is rewarded.  That people are protected from harm and injustice.
  • He does what is right.  Good kings are not despots, doing whatever they feel at any particular moment, they act righteously.

One of the comforting things about Jesus as our King is that we know he is going to do right and act right, that we can trust his actions and obey his word with complete confidence in his love and care.
