In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.” (Psalm 22:4, ESV)

David writes as he looks back on the long arc of the history of the Israelites and sees and understands the work of the Lord in history again and again, from calling Abraham out of Ur to the Promised Land, to the trip into Egypt, to the Exodus, to delivering the Promised Land back into their hands, to raising up the prophets, to his own establishment as king, David can say “our fathers trusted you…and you delivered them.”  So written.  So done.

This is the power of history, not in recalling what we have done or accomplished in the past, nor even what our forefathers have achieved, but in looking back on what God has done, how he has shaped events and people in such a way that his will is done, his plan accomplished, and his people provided for.
