For the arms of the wicked will be broken, But the Lord sustains the righteous.” (Psalm 37:17, NASB95)

In sharp contrast to the wicked whose arms will be broken, the Lord will sustain the righteous.  “Sustain” means: “uphold, support, i.e., cause a state to continue, with a focus that whatever is necessary to remain in that state is given, including a maintaining power.” [Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains, Hebrew]

I love the picture.  Whatever it takes for the Lord to sustain the righteous, he will do.  He will not be constrained by the wicked or by external circumstances, or the plots or plans of men, he will sustain the righteous.  This, dear reader, you can count on.

I’d like to think that the New Testament parallel to this verse is:

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38–39, NASB95)
