But you, you must return to your God; keep love and justice, and wait continually for your God.” (Hosea 12:6, LEB)

God’s instructions to apostate Israel.

Some thoughts:

  1. Apostasy is not the end.  God could have given up on Israel and just chose another people to accomplish his purpose.  He does not do so because he has made a covenant with Israel.  Their unfaithfulness does not negate the faithfulness of God. This is what grace is all about.
  2. You must return to your God. This is the first thing to understand about being unfaithful to God.  You can return.  God is waiting for your return. More grace.
  3. Faithfulness to God requires keeping love.  The Hebrew word that we translate “keep” means “to guard, preserve, watch over, secure.”  Love doesn’t just happen, it must be cultivated.
  4. Faithfulness to God means to keep justice. See above 🙂
  5. Faithfulness to God means to wait continually for God. This is something that the Scriptures call us to do again and again.  My favorite verse in this genre says:

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31, KJV 1900)

Would you be faithful, dear reader?  God has told you what you must do.
