Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” (Hebrews 9:26, NASB95)

The sacrifices that the priests made at the temple could not “put away sin,” indeed the Hebrew word to describe what happened at the temple means “to cover over.”  When the priest sacrificed animals for their own sins and the sins of the people, they were covering over sin, not putting it away.

The writer to Hebrews sets the theology straight here.  Jesus came, not to cover over sin, but to put it away forever.  He only needed to do this once, the Good News Bible says here: Instead, now when all ages of time are nearing the end, he has appeared once and for all, to remove sin through the sacrifice of himself.

Jesus suffered once, when all ages of time were nearing their end, in order to put away sin by sacrificing himself. For us. In our place. On our behalf. So that he might bring us into right relationship with God. Inconceivable.
