Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.” (1 Peter 5:8–9, NASB95)

Peter’s instructions to fellow followers of Christ in Asia Minor.

The Devil can be resisted, and he can be resisted by ordinary believers.  We tend to think of the Devil as so powerful that one can hardly resist it when he brings temptation into our lives.  Peter tells us that this is not true, the Devil can be resisted when we stand firm in our faith.

Even though Peter describes Satan as “a roaring lion,” the Holy Spirit within us is more powerful than the Devil outside of us.
