and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 1:5–6, NASB95)

John describes three aspects of Jesus Christ in relation to his people here and three characteristics of Jesus.  The three characteristics are:

  1. Jesus is the faithful witness
  2. Jesus is the firstborn of the dead
  3. Jesus is the ruler of the kings of the earth.

Three three aspects of Jesus in relation to his people are:

  1. He loves his people (us, John writes)
  2. He released his people from their sins by His blood
  3. He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father

Being released from our sins by His blood especially strikes me.  There are several implications in this statement alone:

  1. We are sinners
  2. We need to be released or freed from our sins
  3. We can be released from our sins
  4. The way we are released from our sins is through the blood of Christ.

This is the good news. This is the gospel.
