“If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.” (John 12:26, NASB95)

Jesus says two things here in regards to anyone who would serve him.

  1. A servant of Jesus must follow Jesus. Where I am, there my servant will be also. The Zodhiates Word Study Bible in its article on “to follow” comments:

Following Jesus thus denotes a fellowship of faith as well as a fellowship of life, sharing in His sufferings not only inwardly, but outwardly if necessary (Matt. 9:9, 19, 27). Such outward fellowship with Jesus, however, could not continue without inner moral and spiritual fellowship, without a life resembling His and a self–denying sharing of His cross.

  2. The Father will honor a servant of Jesus. We do not usually think of a servant as one who gets honor, usually the one whom the servant serves is the one who receives honor.  In God’s kingdom servants will be honored also.

If we are to serve Jesus, we are to be with him wherever he is.  He is with the poor, the broken, the sinful, the marginalized, and the outcast.  We will find him there, will we be found there also?
