And because of lawlessness being brought to the full The love of the many will grow cold、” (Matthew 24:12, EMPH)

Jesus is speaking here of the signs of the end times and one of those signs is that “the love of many will grow cold.” This will happen “because of lawlessness.”  Lawlessness here does not mean “people won’t pay attention to the law and will do whatever they want, as if one of the signs of Christ’s return will be people who disregard the laws of the land [though it probably includes this].  The Complete Word Study Bible comments: “In most cases in the NT it means not the absence of the Law, but the violation of Law, i.e., transgression or lawlessness. In the NT, it places stress, not in a subjective law that we ourselves create for our convenience, but chiefly in a divinely instituted Law.” The problem that we see then, is that people reject God’s law, in comparison to the law instituted by God, they live lawless lives.

The result of this rejection of God’s standards is that “the love of many will grow cold.”  This means that their interest in and love of God will flag and fail.  They will turn away from God. They will do what they want. They will fall into apostasy.

The faith lesson here is the vital importance of doing what God has called us to do, of being a doer of the word and not just a hearer.  There is something about doing that keeps us faithful to the Lord. If we remain a doer, then the very next promise that Jesus makes applies to us:

But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:13, ESV)
