“Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (Exodus 4:11, ESV)

When you think about it, God seems a lot less worried about his reputation than we do.  This verse is a good example.  What is God doing not only acknowledging responsibility for making people “mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind,” but seemingly embracing it.  Our inclination is to hide these facts away, God’s inclination seems to be exactly the opposite.  Like I said, doesn’t God care about his own reputation?

I was listening to a Veritas forum a few years back and one of the speakers pointed out that this was a stunning acceptance of responsibility on God’s part.  Totally unexpected from our own perspective and so we try and explain it away.  While we are explaining, God is embracing.

I don’t have a good explanation for this myself.  Certainly God has purpose in all that he does, and he certainly uses “bad” things to bring about good [would the centurion in Luke 7 have ever come to Christ had his servant not lay at the point of death?], but ultimately working out the implications of this verse to everything that happens in the world is beyond us.  God does what he does and he doesn’t solicit our opinion on the apparent “fairness” of it.
